A new policy dealing with the use and reservation of library study rooms was recently put in to effect. Some highlights of the policy are:

• Study rooms can only be reserved by groups (consisting of at least half of the room's total occupancy)
• Rooms may be reserved for a maximum of three hours with no renewals if other groups are waiting
• Reservations may be made by contacting the front desk of the library (x2050)
• Please note the green signs on study room windows, as they indicate reservations (see example below)

Databases Restored

Two databases eliminated last year – Ovid Nursing Collection II: Lippencott Premier Nursing Journals and ProQuest Nursing & Allied Health Source - have been restored on a PASCAL-negotiated one year contract thanks to several SC libraries who agreed to foot the bill for the entire state. These databases combine to index 863 titles, and provide full text for 738 titles.

New Credo Reference Materials

Our Credo Reference collection has grown to over 450 titles. If you're unfamiliar with Credo Reference, here's a description:

A reference source that includes more than 450 reference books, 200,000 graphic images, and 100,000 audio pronunciation files and sound clips. Study For Your Exams in the Library

The Thrift Library is Big, Beautiful, and … Quiet. It  contains 10 study rooms for group work, and many cubicles for individual study. When you are ready to take a break, there is even a café in the basement that provides wonderful coffee, tea, sandwiches, snacks and specialty drinks – and a noisy place to study if you can’t function in the quiet. Come to the library.

MLA 7^th Ed. Now Available in Gale Databases

The citation generation feature contained within the dozen or so databases supplied by Gale (Academic One File, etc.) contains the latest format changes found in the new MLA Manual / 7^th ed.

Here are the changes you'll see:

•   No more underlining — publication titles and the name of the online product are now italicized

•   No more URLs — MLA no longer requires URLs, but encourages writers to provide a URL if the citation information does not easily lead readers to the source

•   Continuous pagination — this is no longer an issue for scholarly journal citations; both volume and issue numbers are required, regardless of pagination

•   Publication medium — since all documents are accessed from an online Gale resource, the citation will always include the medium "Web." In addition, MLA has eliminated the requirement to include the name of the service ("Gale") and the name of the subscribing institution

•   New abbreviations — when certain metadata is missing, such as publisher or page numbers, there are suggested abbreviations to display denoting that fact

Caveats –

• Finds less than 50% of your sources. Hit rate goes down the older the source. Poor return on articles.

• BibMe is a tool for saving you time, not for doing what you cannot do. You still have to understand the rules of your citation style, because BibMe, like all citation generators, makes mistakes which you have to find and correct.
