College of Education

“Educators who are builders of knowledge, values, and community”

The College of Education is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The College of Education offers major programs that lead to Bachelor of Science degrees and initial teacher licensure through the South Carolina State Department of Education. These major programs include Elementary Education; Elementary Education with add-on certification in Early Childhood Education; Elementary Education with add-on certification in Special Education: Learning Disabilities; Early Childhood Education; and Special Education: Multi-Categorical. In collaboration with the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Education offers the student the option of completing a prescribed sequence of Professional Education courses that lead to a Bachelor of Arts degree with initial teaching certification in Secondary English or Secondary Social Studies, or a Bachelor of Science degree with initial teaching certification in Secondary Mathematics. The College of Visual and Performing Arts offers the Bachelor of Music Education degree, and in collaboration with the College of Education, there is a sequence of courses that lead to initial teaching certification in Instrumental Music or Vocal/Choral Music or a Bachelor of Arts degree with initial teaching certification in Art Education. Teacher candidates, who obtain a valid, standard certificate issued by the South Carolina State Department of Education, may be eligible for certification by another state, the District of Columbia, or a United States territory under South Carolina’s reciprocity agreement. However, it is suggested that the candidate who plans to teach in another location than South Carolina consult the respective location’s Department of Education to determine whether there are additional requirements for certification.

The content of each course in an education program is aligned with the standards of the Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (InTASC), the respective Specialty Professional Association (SPA) standards, the South Carolina state curriculum standards, the ADEPT assessment instrument, and the Anderson University College of Education dispositions. By clicking on any of the programs listed, the prospective student will be linked to a description that provides information about that program. More detailed information related to each curriculum may be found in its respective section in the current edition of the Anderson University General Catalog.
