This event also includes an improvisation workshop led by AU’s own Robert Homer-Drummond.

Join the AU theatre students and faculty as our guest for this exciting two-day workshop!

Sword Play

Sword play is utilized regularly on stage in theater, dance, and opera productions across the world. It is a valuable tool in the performer's toolbox when trained properly. Well-executed stage combat excites the crowd, adds suspense, and increases production value. However, poor stage combat can come across as cheesy, or even worse, can put both actors and audience in danger. In this workshop students will be trained to use a rapier-style sword onstage in a safe and effective way. Starting with basics and moving to intermediate level, students will learn footwork, concepts of attack and defense along with distance, timing, rhythm, and "blade traffic." This exciting workshop will cover beginner- to intermediate-level skills; no previous experience is necessary. Students will be introduced to a variety of stylized choreography and can look forward to a fun-filled, yet physically challenging theatrical experience.

Please note that students must wear closed-toed sneakers and active wear. Students must also bring a closed-fingered glove (such as a leather work glove or batting glove.)
