Anderson University Declared Winner of Blood Drive Competition
Anderson University has been declared the winner of the second annual blood drive competition between Anderson University and nearby rival Erskine College. Dr. Evans Whitaker, president of Anderson University, accepted the winner’s trophy at the Anderson/ Erskine basketball game in Due West on February 9. The event, which is sponsored by AnMed Health Blood Center, began two years ago when student development officials from both schools sought a community service project to draw the traditional rivals together to aid the community.

Blood was collected from faculty, staff, and students on both campuses last week, resulting in a total of 224 pints of blood collected between the two schools. According to Deb Taylor, director of health services at Anderson University, approximately 14 percent of donors were first-time donors. “Statistics show that if someone donates 3-4 times in a year they are more likely to become lifetime donors,” said Taylor. “That is one of our goals—to encourage our faculty, staff, and students to become lifetime donors and continue to give back to our community. This event was successful due to the teamwork and selfless giving; our AU family arose to the occasion.”
