ANDERSON UNIVERSITY SIFE TEAM WINS AT USA REGIONAL COMPETITION

The Anderson University SIFE (Students In Free Enterprise) team was named a 1st runner-up at the SIFE USA Regional Competition held March 30, 2009, in Atlanta, Ga. The event is one of 16 SIFE USA Regional Competitions being held across the United States in March and April.

Anderson University SIFE is one of more than 500 SIFE programs in the United States. Participating students use business concepts to develop community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard of living for people in need.

During this academic year, the Anderson University SIFE team organized seven projects in the Anderson community, including financial literacy seminars in conjunction with Upstate Federal Credit Union at Fusion Warehouse, an entrepreneurship game night at Anderson University campus, business ethics contest with Anderson Montessori School, environmental sustainability project involving Sam’s Club, Bill’s Restaurant and Skin’s Hot Dogs, a light switch cover project that reduced energy usage by 13 percent and a recycling project at T.L. Hanna High school.

In response to the environmental sustainability project, Anderson University SIFE student Katie Van Gieson stated: “The environmental sustainability project completed at Skin’s Hot Dogs and Bill’s Restaurant was a tremendous success thanks to the help from Sam's Club. The SIFE team helped the two businesses save not only a total of $1,600 in a year’s time, but also reduced the amount of energy being used by simply replacing existing materials with energy efficient products. I think the results will influence the rest of the community to try to ‘Go Green.’ ”

The Financial Literacy project, sponsored by Upstate Federal Credit Union and Fusion Warehouse was summed up by AU SIFE student Amber Coston: “In a decade of credit, we taught the generation of the future to use their money wisely in bank accounts to ensure they have a successful future.”

The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual series of competitions that provide a forum for teams to present the results of their projects and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at the international level when the national champion teams from each country meet at the SIFE World Cup.
