The Playhouse at Anderson University Presents
“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee”
AU theatre season continues
with Tony award-winning musical
The Anderson University Playhouse is proud
to present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” February
23-26 at 7:30 pm in AU’s Belk Theatre. There will also be a matinee performance
on Saturday, February 26 at 2:00 pm.
“Spelling
Bee” is a hilarious, Tony award-winning musical centering on the lives of six
children and their reasons for competing to win their middle school spelling
bee. Following its original opening at Second Stage Theatre in New York, The Wall Street Journal offered the
following review of the production on February 11, 2005:
“Sometimes
you can tell how good a show is going to be as soon as it starts. 'The
25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee' was like that. The lights went down,
the five-piece orchestra struck up, and an anxious-looking teenager walked on
stage and sang: 'At the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee/My parents keep
on telling me/Just being here is winning/Although/I know it isn't so.' Pow! All
at once Second Stage Theatre was filled with the warm, knowing laughter of a
roomful of people who knew they were about to have their socks charmed
off."
Seating
in AU’s Belk Theatre is limited; call the AU box office for tickets,
864-231-2080, before the production is sold out. Tickets are $10.00 for the
general public and $5.00 for AU students, faculty, and staff. The running time
of the musical is less than two hours.
