Anderson University SIFE Team Wins at USA Regional Competition
The Anderson University SIFE (Students in Free
Enterprise) team was named Regional Champion at the SIFE USA Regional
Competition held April 4 in Atlanta, GA. The event is one of 12 SIFE USA Regional Competitions
being held across the United States in March and April.
"The Anderson
University SIFE Team has been working diligently this year to improve the lives
of the people of Anderson through various service projects within the
community,” said AU SIFE team president Danielle Atkinson. “Our hard work and
persistence has paid off through winning the USA Regional Championship. We are
excited to advance to the National Exposition and continue to have a positive
impact on the Anderson area."
Anderson University is one of nearly 600 programs
in the United States. Participating students use business concepts to
develop community outreach projects that improve the quality of life and standard
of living for people in need.
During this academic year, the Anderson University
SIFE team organized six projects in the Anderson community, including an
environmental sustainability project involving Sam’s Club, in which the team is
once again a national finalist.
Other projects include Campbell’s “Let’s Can
Hunger” Challenge, a project that raised over 34,000 pounds of food for the
Anderson Interfaith Ministries (AIM) food bank. The AU SIFE team also partnered
with Upstate Federal Credit Union on “We Stand for Kids,” a financial literacy
program. Additionally, the team is working with Lowe’s to improve the
Children’s Calvary Home in Anderson, as part of the Lowe’s Community
Improvement Challenge.
The culmination of the SIFE program is an annual
series of competitions that provide a forum for teams to present the results of
their projects, and to be evaluated by business leaders serving as
judges. Teams compete first at the regional and national levels, then at
the international level when the national champion teams from each country meet
at the SIFE World Cup.
As a SIFE USA Regional Champion, the Anderson
University SIFE team now advances to the 2011 SIFE USA National Exposition in
Minneapolis, Minnesota, May 10-12.
