The Playhouse at Anderson University Presents The Misanthrope
AU Playhouse produces rarely
seen classic
The Anderson University Playhouse is proud
to present The Misanthrope by French
playwright Molière in a delightful English translation by
Richard Wilbur. The play will be staged January 25th - 28th
at 7:30 pm in AU’s Belk Theatre. There will also be a matinee performance on
Saturday, January 28th at 2:00 pm.
“I’ve
wanted to do this play for a very long time,” says Robert Homer-Drummond, AU’s Associate
Professor of Theatre and the play’s Director. “It’s studied in many literature
classes but rarely staged, so this may very well be the only chance that people
in our community have to see it performed. It’s set in the early 1700’s, so
those who enjoy period dramas will definitely want to see this one. It’s always
gratifying to see our AU students tackle a really challenging piece of
literature and do such excellent work!”
The Misanthrope is arguably the most layered and complex of
Moliere’s plays, and less farcical than some. The ethical struggles of the
production’s main characters present a relatable story for today’s audience,
but despite their challenges, the characters also demonstrate great humor. The Misanthrope offers an enjoyable
theatre experience as the audience marvels at the outlandish yet recognizable
character portraits. With elaborate sets and costumes and live harp and
harpsichord music, the production is an event not to be missed.
Seating
