Members of the Concert Choir at The South Carolina School of the Arts perform classic and modern choral standards, spirituals, anthems and works by contemporary composers, such as Eric Whitaker and Morton Lauridsen. This mid-size, select group of approximately 45 members includes all majors, although it is primarily comprised of music majors and upperclassmen.
Each year the Concert Choir performs with an orchestra in the Choral Masterworks concert. The concert's repertoire has included Beethoven's Choral Fantasy, Handel's Messiah, Mozart's Requiem, and Haydn's The Creation. The Concert Choir also performs regionally and internationally. In addition, Concert Choir members are required to participate in the 100-member University Choir.
Students in Concert Choir can apply to be section leaders and mentors for other choir members, practicing the mentorship and coaching they receive from their instructors.
How to join
Students must audition to join the Concert Choir. The audition includes basic vocal exercises to assess the student's range, voice type and sight-reading abilities. Concert Choir meets twice each week under the direction of Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities Dr. Richard Williamson. Students who participate in two choral groups are eligible for merit scholarships. Please attend one of The South Carolina School of the Arts music audition dates the year before you register as a student.
If you're interested in auditioning for the Concert Choir, contact Dr. Williamson at firstname.lastname@example.org or (864) 231-2122.
