Anderson University music grads record music for major motion pictures and perform with pop stars around the world. The South Carolina School of the Arts' Johnny Mann Center for Commercial Music is where students can prepare for such a career in AU's Christ-centered, nurturing environment.
Music technology and improvisation
At the center, named for the late Johnny Mann, a Grammy Award-winning composer, arranger, and friend of AU, students earn a Bachelor of Music with a Concentration in Commercial Music. Performance-based and focused on contemporary styles, our program gives students a background in songwriting, arranging and conducting.
Our program also has a strong emphasis on the technology of the music industry and the improvisational skills needed to perform in a commercial environment. Graduates will have hands-on skills in studio recording and have the tools and knowledge to market themselves and become established musicians in the ever-changing industry.
Be mentored by leaders
Our music students have access to instructors who are leaders in the industry. Our faculty have trained at elite music schools, such as the Eastman School of Music and performed across the Broadway, country, gospel, jazz, pop and rock genres. Our instructors also are Addy Award-winning composers of music for television commercials and direct music for plays.
World-class visiting musicians
The Johnny Mann Center attracts prominent visiting artists. Saxophonist Jamey Aebersold, a 2014 recipient of the National Endowment of the Arts Jazz Masters Award, recently conducted a workshop at AU. Jazz musician Arturo Sandoval, a 10-time Grammy Award winner, also performed on campus.
